I know people are going to comment here (and already have) saying to download it for free, but guess who that hurts? Not the big music artists that make money from touring and product endorsements. It hurts the 'normal people' who make their living as session musicians, instrument techs, and clerical jobs and the like with the record companies.
You can afford to buy a five dollar MP3 album from amazon. You can afford Spotify.
You can be really frugal and just listen to the radio and free internet radio stations. Pirating music is stealing. Stealing isn't frugal. It's morally uncool. OP, you can get legal cheap music with amazon's constantly changing list of $5 albums or a cheap streaming service. Thanks for being cool and ethical and concerned about what's legal!. I tend to listen to Spotify free streaming and buy songs here & there from iTunes ala carte.
It's not a ton. My purchase history says I've bought like 35 tracks in the past 4 months, some of them 99 or 69 cent sales. But for me it's still a much better option than getting a paid Spotify subscription because (a) all the streaming data usage when I'm driving and (b) it's an ongoing bill, and I'm not always sure how much money I'll have at the end of the month.
But I do try to support the artists even a teeny bit.
